Composition conceived for the Funkloch OnAir concert series
For Lara Stanic, Sebastian Hofmann und Rafael Rütti
For 3-5 (or more) players, 30-45 minutes. Radio pieces consists of three parts that flow smoothly into one another.
Part I: Each player has a radio with headphones. There is a score* that tells them when to search for a new station. They play what they hear.
Part II: Everyone plays only ‘noise’ on their instrument, for example by rubbing the drumheads, pressing pedals, bowing the instrument or using preparations. Recorded by the sound engineer, partially amplified, layered, filtered over time, instrumentalists should follow the filtering until the sound is achieved.
Part III: Filtered noise as pitch, radio frequencies as pulse. Filtered sounds disappear over time, leaving a dry pulse at the end, like Morse code. Pulse is given via in-ear as a click.
*The score is recreated from the frequencies that can be received on site.
